About this tool

What the Budget Calculator actually does.

Our Budget Calculator is a two-minute version of a personal P&L. Enter your monthly take-home pay, add every category you spend on, and it tells you what's left over — money available for savings, debt payoff, or investing.

Most budgets fail because they're too detailed. This tool stays high-level on purpose: housing, transportation, food, insurance, entertainment, and 'everything else.' Enough categories to be real, few enough that you'll actually finish.

Frequently asked

Common questions about this tool.

How do I use the 50/30/20 rule?

+

Roughly: 50% of take-home on needs (housing, food, transport, insurance), 30% on wants (dining, entertainment, travel), 20% toward savings and debt payoff. Our calculator makes it easy to see how close you are.

What counts as 'needs' vs. 'wants'?

+

Needs are what keeps you housed, fed, safe, and able to work. Wants are everything else. Dining out, subscriptions, and upgrades mostly fall in 'wants' even when they feel routine.

Why isn't my budget working in real life?

+

Usually one of three reasons: categories are too vague, one-off costs (car repair, vet bill) weren't reserved for, or income is variable. All three are solvable — book a call if you want help structuring it.
